The KFN was founded in 1979 as an independent, interdisciplinary research institute. According to its statutes the objective of the autonomous research institution is to pursue and promote practice-oriented criminological research. The KFN is funded by a charity. Based on a cooperation agreement it works closely together with the university of Hanover. In the meantime the institute has worked as an independent research institution co-funded by the Ministry For Science and Culture Of Lower Saxony. Prof. Dr. Christian Pfeiffer is the director and chairman of the KFN.
